Marine Mammal Center Comes to the Rescue

A.K.A. "A Boy Named Beverly"

Sunday, August 6th was just another lazy afternoon at the Marin Rod and Gun Club.  Members enjoying the last few rays of sunlight, kids playing and fishing on the pier, the usual.  Even spotting the occasional sea lions swimming about the pier are not uncommon.  But this one was hungrier than usual, and flipper-floppered its way up the rocks to the lawn.  The kids (Sophia, Angelique and Anton) realized one small bag of sardines was not going to last.  The *adults* realized something else... this little pup had eartags!  A phone call was in order.

Enter the brave volunteers of the Marine Mammal Center, who rushed onsite and explained that this baby sea lion had been released on July 14th at the Farallon Islands Marine Sanctuary, only to swim 20 miles to make it to the Rod and Gun Club!  They skillfully netted "Beverly", who seemed content yet curious back in her transport cage.  And guess what: Beverly is a... boy!  They explained that her.. no.. his gender had been determined only *after* the name someone had chosen, well - just seemed to fit.

Our thanks to the Marine Mammal Center, and good luck to Beverly!
