LONG-TIME BAY AREA BUSINESS TO CLOSE
After almost 65 years in downtown San
Rafael, Western Sport Shop has announced that it will close its doors as
of the end of January 2012. It has served fishermen, hunters and
outdoorsmen since its founding in early 1947 by Gene Thompson. The
business has been owned for the past 25 years by the James M. Edgar
family of Kentfield. The Edgars have decided to retire from the
sporting goods business.
Generations of families have sought
information, advice and gear from the professional staff at Western.
For years it has been a gathering place for outdoor enthusiasts who
share their stories, experiences and photos. Overtime, Western has
sponsored a variety of seminars, fly fishing fairs, deep sea fishing
trips and has taught classes on fly-fishing, fly-tying and duck
calling. It has become a bay area institution.
The Edgars are still hopeful that a new
owner may surface to carry on this 65 year old tradition. Western Sport
Shop stands as the only specialty retailer of fishing, hunting and
fly-fishing equipment along the Highway 101 corridor., It has directly
served the North Bay population centers of Marin and Sonoma Counties, as
well as San Francisco and the East Bay. Its website has reached
customers all over the world. It will be missed. |

MR&GC Proposed By-Laws Amendments
(Present language in bold
Proposed
changes in italics)
Article V Membership, Paragraph 8
Any member more than three (3) months in arrears in payment of dues
(March 31) shall be declared delinquent. The Secretary
shall notify all delinquent members. Upon payment of delinquent dues
such member shall be reinstalled. Any member delinquent in payment of
dues for three (3) additional months (June 30)
shall be dropped from the membership roll …
The purpose of this change is to clarify
the timeline for delinquent dues. The Board voted TO RECOMMEND
this change.
Article VI Meetings, Paragraph 1
Twenty (20) Fifteen (15) members shall constitute a
quorum … The Board voted NOT TO RECOMMEND this
proposal to reduce the required number of members for a general meeting
quorum.
Article VI Meetings
Proposal to add a new paragraph 5 and renumber existing paragraph 5 to 6
as follows: 5. Members, Directors and Officers intoxicated or under
the influence of drugs will be excused from attendance at Board of
Directors meetings and not given credit for attendance. The Board
voted NOT TO RECOMMEND this change.
Article VII Board of Directors,
Paragraph 3 Any Directors
or officers failing to attend three (3) consecutive
meetings of the Board shall automatically forfeit their seat on the
Board. This proposed amendment was to clarify that officers are
also directors. The Board voted TO RECOMMEND this change.
Article IX Standing Committees,
Paragraph 6 C
C. The Committee shall meet when called
by the Chair. The Committee
shall also meet quarterly with the current President to discuss matters
of policy or welfare of the Club.
The Board decided it was up to the
President to call such a meeting if needed and should not be mandated
and voted NOT TO RECOMMEND this change.
Article X Duties, Paragraph 2.
PRESIDENT Proposal to add a
new C, as follows: C. The President may not miss more than four (4)
meetings (Board and General) in any 12 month period. If this occurs,
the First Vice President shall assume the office. Since the By-Laws
already provide for dismissal of any director who misses three
consecutive board meetings the Board voted NOT TO RECOMMEND
this change.
Article XI Elections, Paragraph 1
Nominations shall be made at the regular membership meeting held in
the month of October. Candidates for nomination shall have been
selected by the Nominating Committee and approved by the Board. In
addition, nominations may be made from the floor; however,
members nominating other members for office must not be intoxicated or
under the influence of drugs. The Board deemed this proposed amendment
unenforceable and voted NOT TO RECOMMEND this change. |
Article XI Elections
Add new Paragraph 2 and renumber existing Paragraph 2 to Paragraph 3, as
follows: 2. Members who have medical conditions or mental illnesses
such as manic depression/bipolar disorder, multiple personality
syndrome, dementia, Alzheimer’s or drug addiction are not eligible to
run for office and cannot serve on the Board of Directors. The
Board rejected this proposed amendment as a probably illegal
discriminatory policy and voted NOT TO RECOMMEND this
change.
Children’s Christmas Party Thank
You
This event is so special. To see all
those smiling little faces, so anxious to see Santa & Mrs. Claus,
laughing and having fun with Jeremy the Juggler. The excitement when
they open their presents or have a winning raffle ticket. This is the
payback to the hardworking volunteers who make this event a success.
Hats off and applauds to Laura Lentini
who worked all year long to get the best bargains and quality of toys.
No small job. She even braved the wee hours of the morning on Black
Friday. Thank you Laura for all that you do.
Getting everything ready for the big
event took lots of hands. From the kitchen to the gift wrappers,
decorators to raffle sales and cleanup. My heartfelt thanks goes to
Bill George, Donny Boslar and the kitchen crew, Dottie & Phil Fecteau,
Mike & Elvie Lowrey, Gary Mehrtens, Jeanne Brindley, Marsha Klein, Naim
Robertson, Debbie Lewis, Billy Sheehan, Vicki Cooke, Stephan Avanozian
and Marti Camiccia. A special thank you to Sue-Ann Joy, always by and
on my side, reliable, encouraging and helping me to dodge the curve
balls. To my son-in-law Ryan for stepping in at the last minute and
doing a great job as M. C. Last but not least, thank you to my husband,
Jim Brown, for his patience. He deserves a medal. Always willing to be
my work horse and fix-it man.
Thank you to everyone who comes with
their children and grandchildren and is supportive by buying lunches and
raffle tickets so that we can continue to offer this great event.

KID’S DAY ON THE PIER
Kid’s Day chairman Ed Meagor has
selected Saturday, August 11th for the annual event. High
tide at the Golden Gate will be 9:12 am making the ideal starting time
at 10:00 am on our pier.
Ed says all kids must have a parent in
attendance. Hot dogs, sodas and chips will be served. Please bring
your own fishing equipment, club supplies are limited.
Co-chairs Bob Vandermeer (457-0516) and
Joe Morrison (388-2034) will be accepting new and used fishing rods and
equipment donations. We want every kid to get something, so please be
generous.
Needed: Piano bench or stool
We’ve brought the piano that has been on
the stage down into the meeting room so it can be enjoyed by the
membership and we need someplace for the pianist to sit. |
